Why We Like The Sundowner GTX Backpacking Boot
The Vasque Sundowner first became famous over a decade ago, and Vasque is continuing the tradition with the new Sundowner GTX Backpacking Boot. This Gore-Tex lined boot is completely waterproof for the soggy conditions that are part of life on the trail, and features a waterproof, tough, and supple full-grain leather upper that protects your foot from water, mud, and rocks. Speaking of rocks, the Sundowner features a molded PU midsole and TPU midfoot stabilizer to cushion your feet on rough trails and provide reliability stability to save your ankles, while the classic lace-up design lets you find the perfect snug and supportive fit. Vasque finished the Sundowner with a Pyrenees outsole, which is modeled on the original Sundowner sole, for grip, stability, and reliable braking on steep and slick terrain.

IMO these boots are the best light hikers. I’ve been wearing them since the early 80s, they have the best soul pattern, Gore-Tex liner, and leather. They are my go to footwear or just about everything I do… photography, shooting sports, hiking in the mountains and even driving.

I purchased for my son-in-law for Christmas. He loved them, however, they were a little small. I wanted to return for a size larger, but they did not have them.

I’ve owned Sundowners for decades. Best boot in the WORLD. Heard Vasque was discontinued and immediately bought another pair of the GTX boots! So sad about a Legend..

The Vasque Sundowner is the legend. They look sharp, are bombproof, and after a little breaking in, you could set out to hike the AT. Very good grip and ankle support. Technology has somewhat overtaken these boots in that they are not the lightest, nor the most technically proficient. Having said that, you will never regret owning a pair of Vasque sundowners.

I really wanted to like these. Having had them previously, I found that the general fit out of the box was a bit stiff, both in the sole as well as the upper. I tend to run an 11 in running shoes, and the 10.5 fit for length, but felt a bit narrow for my already narrow-ish foot. The instep also felt a bit low cut for me, and ended up feeling like the top of my foot was squeezed by the laces/tongue and upper. I just didn't have the confidence that the break-in was going to work. Overall, they weren't going to work for me, and I wish they had. Construction looks good, the soles have a tried and true design, and I like the classic leather look.

I first bought a paper of Vasque Sundowners around 1990. I used it for years and years (summer hiking mostly). Finally, in 2005 while coming back down half dome, the sole sheared loose. I patched it up and made it back without problem--came home and went to a store and asked for the very best hiking boot they carried. They sold me a German boot (Meindl) very popular in Europe for a hefty price. It lasted for a few years (soles wore out) but never had the feel or durability of the Sundowner. I can tell you 2 things for certain. First, the boots require a break-in period. Don't buy them and head out for a long hike. Second, I have no idea about changes in the materials, etc., but these are the most comfortable boots that i have ever worn. Nothing else is close. Buy hiking boots a bit larger than street shoes.

I took my recently graduated son on the trip to Montana to celebrate his recent graduation and being valedictorian of his class. I bought two pairs of vasque sundowners but he decided that he would prefer a pair of Timberland boots and so I returned his and kept mine. The first day on our trip to Montana we went on a 6.2 mile hike on the trail called beehive valley which climbs to a bit more than 9000 feet. A few miles into the hike I felt some burning on the back of my heels. I took special care to make sure I was wearing proper hiking socks as well as my son so I was puzzled. He didnt have any issue with his timberlands but I took off my boots at the first chance and noticed I had already some bad blisters forming. It wasn’t long before the back of my heels were in excruciating pain. I didn’t want to ruin our first day of the hike so I kept my mouth shut and didnt mention it to my son. When we got back from the hike I took off my shoes and saw that it was a bloodbath. Hamburger. I’ve added the picture of the back of my heels. I am astonished that there is a clear lack of padding in fact a stitch seen running down the back of the shoe on the inside that’s very abrasive. I had to wear flip-flops for the rest of my five day trip and had to avoid any more hikes which was the whole point of our trip. Crazy that this design flaw could exist after so many iterations knowing that these boots are a “classic” and have been around for a long time. I definitely would not recommend these boots.
